Created at registration
The moment an artist uploads a work on Veriroo, an Artwork Passport is created. It records the creator, creation date, dimensions, medium, and the artist's own statement — timestamped and locked.
Provenance, authentication & the Artwork Passport
Provenance is the documented life story of an artwork — who made it, who has owned it, and how it has moved through the world. On Veriroo, every registered work receives a permanent Artwork Passport: a tamper-proof digital record that travels with the piece forever.
The basics
Provenance is the recorded ownership history of an artwork. A strong provenance answers three questions: who created it, who has owned it, and how did it change hands each time? The word comes from the French provenir — "to come from".
Provenance matters for several reasons. It deters forgery and fraud — a work with a clear, unbroken chain is far harder to fake than one with gaps. It supports valuation — auction houses, insurers, and estate advisors all rely on provenance records. And increasingly, it supports the artist directly: a documented chain means resale royalties can be paid automatically every time the work changes hands.
Historically, provenance was maintained through paper records, receipts, gallery ledgers, and exhibition catalogues — documents that fade, get lost, or can be falsified. Veriroo puts provenance on a permanent digital record from the moment a work is registered, eliminating the paper trail problem entirely.
The Veriroo Artwork Passport
The moment an artist uploads a work on Veriroo, an Artwork Passport is created. It records the creator, creation date, dimensions, medium, and the artist's own statement — timestamped and locked.
Every Passport carries a living Certificate of Authenticity. Unlike a paper CoA that can be lost or separated from the work, Veriroo's CoA is permanently linked to the provenance chain and transfers automatically with each resale.
Each time a work is sold on Veriroo, the new owner is added to the Passport. The full history — every previous owner, every transaction date — is preserved and publicly visible on the work's listing page.
Buyers can request independent expert verification at any point. A credentialled verifier examines the work and issues a formal report, which is permanently appended to the Passport and upgrades the work's trust tier.
Provenance entries cannot be edited or deleted once written. The record is immutable — no party, including Veriroo, can alter historical entries. What is recorded stays recorded.
The artist's resale royalty percentage is encoded into the Passport at registration. It applies to every future resale on Veriroo, automatically and permanently — no chasing, no invoices.
Expert authentication
1
When purchasing a work on Veriroo, the buyer can optionally request expert verification. The verification fee is transparent and shown at checkout. The seller is notified and ships the work to the nominated verifier.
2
A Veriroo-approved verifier — an art historian, conservator, or specialist with documented credentials — physically inspects the work and produces a formal written report covering authenticity, condition, and any relevant provenance observations.
3
The verification report is permanently added to the work's Artwork Passport. The listing's trust tier is upgraded. The buyer receives delivery and the CoA transfers to their ownership. The verifier is paid automatically from escrow.
Trust & transparency
Veriroo is operated by Cardaroo Holdings Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (Company No. 16872413, ICO registered C1926576). Our registered address is 71–75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JQ.
All marketplace transactions use Stripe escrow — buyer funds are held securely until delivery is confirmed, protecting both parties. Sellers are never paid until delivery is confirmed; buyers are never left chasing a refund.
Provenance records are immutable once written. No entry in an Artwork Passport can be altered or deleted — not by the artist, the seller, the buyer, or Veriroo. The record is permanent.
Common questions
A Certificate of Authenticity confirms an artwork is an original work by the stated artist. On Veriroo, every CoA is a living digital record permanently linked to the Artwork Passport — it transfers automatically to each new owner when the work resells, so it can never be separated from the piece.
Paper certificates can be lost, forged, or separated from the work. A Veriroo CoA lives inside the Artwork Passport — permanently linked to the specific work, the specific artist, and the full ownership chain. It cannot be printed and attached to a forgery.
Significantly. Works with clear, documented provenance consistently command higher prices at auction and resale. A well-maintained provenance record also makes insurance, estate valuation, and resale much simpler for collectors.
Yes. Veriroo was built with anonymous artists in mind. You can register works and maintain a provenance chain without disclosing your identity publicly — your verified artist account is the anchor, not your legal name on a public listing.
The Passport transfers to the new owner automatically at settlement. The full provenance chain — every previous owner, every transaction date — is preserved. The original artist's resale royalty is paid at the same time, also automatically.
