Love, follow and share: the quiet signals

Three small controls sit on every piece and every artist gallery. They are the least complicated thing on the platform and they are worth thirty seconds, because one of them is doing more than it looks.

Love is a save

Loving a piece saves it to your own list. It is the same list the app has always called your saves, so a piece loved in a browser shows up saved on your phone and both read the same counter.

Use it the way you would use a folder of photographs of rooms you like. It costs nothing, it commits you to nothing, and a collection of things you loved over a year tells you more about your own taste than any amount of deciding in the moment.

For an artist, loves are the first honest signal you get. A piece with saves and no sale is telling you something specific: people want it and something is in the way, usually price or the absence of a smaller option like a print.

Follow is for the next one

Following an artist means you hear when they put new work up. That is all it does, and it is the thing collectors most often wish they had done, because the piece you almost bought is rarely available the second time you think about it.

Share works without an account

Anyone can share, signed in or not, because passing a link to somebody should never require a sign-up.

Artists: use the Share or Copy buttons rather than copying out of the address bar. A link shared from the buttons previews with a picture of your work. One copied from the address bar does not, and an unadorned link in a message gets tapped far less.

Why the counts are often not shown

Below a threshold, love and follower counts are hidden rather than displayed.

That is deliberate and it is on purpose rather than by accident. A row reading 0 followers advertises emptiness, and for a new platform it would appear on nearly every page, doing quiet damage to work that deserves better. A number appears once it means something. Until then the absence is kinder and just as honest.

If you tap while signed out

Love and Follow are drawn for everybody. Tap one while signed out and the intent carries through sign-in with you, so the action completes on the way back rather than making you find the piece again and tap a second time.

And nothing here ever throws a modal over the page. Being interrupted by a sign-up wall for tapping a heart is a good way to lose somebody who was about to become a collector.
