Buying original art online is more accessible than it has ever been. Understanding what verification actually means, and what to look for before you commit, is one of the most valuable things a collector can do.

Start with the provenance record

Before you look at the price, look at the provenance record. How long has the work been registered? What documentation exists of its creation? Has it been exhibited? Has it been independently inspected? Are there any flags or disputes on record?

A work with a detailed, unbroken provenance record — creation notes, dated photographs, exhibition history, and expert inspection reports — is a fundamentally different proposition to one with nothing but a seller’s claim and a price. Understand the trust tier

Provenance-Backed means the creation timeline is documented and creator-verified. Expert Verified means an independent credentialled expert has examined the work and issued a formal report — the strongest trust signal available.

For high-value purchases, Expert Verified status — or the ability to commission verification at checkout — should be non-negotiable.

Check the Certificate of Authenticity

Any work you purchase should come with a Certificate of Authenticity that can be independently verified. A paper certificate or PDF with no verification mechanism is of limited value — there is no independent way to confirm the claims it makes.

Browse the artist’s gallery page

Before purchasing from an artist on Veriroo, browse their gallery page. How many works have they registered? How long have they been on the platform? What does their provenance record look like across their body of work? An artist who has been building a consistent, well-documented record over time is a significantly lower risk than one who registered a single work last week.
