How to buy verified original art online

Veriroo Editorial — Buying & Collecting

Buying original art online is more accessible than it has ever been. But accessibility cuts both ways — the same open market that makes it easy to discover new artists also makes it easy to purchase something that is not what it is claimed to be. Understanding what verification actually means, and what to look for before you commit, is one of the most valuable things a collector can do.

Start with the provenance record

Before you look at the price, look at the provenance record. How long has the work been registered? What documentation exists of its creation? Has it been exhibited? Has it been independently inspected? Are there any flags or disputes on record?

A work with a detailed, unbroken provenance record — creation notes, dated photographs, exhibition history, and expert inspection reports — is a fundamentally different proposition to one with nothing but a seller’s claim and a price. On Veriroo, the full provenance record is visible on every listing before you commit to a purchase.

Understand the trust tier

On Veriroo, every listing carries one of three trust tiers: Self-Recorded, Provenance-Backed, or Expert Verified. Understanding what each tier means is essential to making an informed purchase decision.

Self-Recorded means the creator claims authorship but no independent verification has taken place. This is appropriate for lower-value works where the buyer is comfortable with the level of risk, or where they intend to commission verification themselves. Provenance-Backed means the creation timeline is documented and creator-verified. Expert Verified means an independent credentialled expert has examined the work and issued a formal report — the strongest trust signal available.

For high-value purchases, Expert Verified status — or the ability to commission verification at checkout — should be non-negotiable.

Check the Certificate of Authenticity

Any work you purchase should come with a Certificate of Authenticity that can be independently verified. A paper certificate or PDF with no verification mechanism is of limited value — there is no independent way to confirm the claims it makes.

On Veriroo, every completed sale issues a living CoA with a QR code that links to the work’s live provenance record. Scan it before you buy. Scan it when the work arrives. If the details match what you were told, you have independent confirmation. If they do not, you have information you need to act on.

Use escrow for every transaction

Never pay for an artwork before payment is protected. Escrow holds your payment securely until you confirm that the work has arrived in the condition described. On Veriroo, every transaction uses escrow as standard — the seller cannot access funds until you confirm delivery.

This protects you from the most common risks of buying art online: works that do not arrive, works that are significantly different from the listing, or works that arrive damaged. If there is a dispute, Veriroo support mediates before any funds are released.

Request expert verification for high-value purchases

For any listing on Veriroo, you can request independent expert verification at checkout. A credentialled verifier examines the work before it is dispatched and issues a formal report that is permanently added to the provenance chain. You only complete the purchase when you are satisfied with the result.

For high-value purchases, this step is strongly recommended. The cost of verification is small relative to the value of the work, and the formal report provides a level of assurance that no photograph or seller description can match.

Browse the artist’s gallery page

Before purchasing from an artist on Veriroo, browse their gallery page. How many works have they registered? How long have they been on the platform? What does their provenance record look like across their body of work? An artist who has been building a consistent, well-documented record over time is a significantly lower risk than one who registered a single work last week.

The artist’s gallery page also shows their verified identity on the platform, their mediums and specialisms, and any contact options — giving you a fuller picture of who you are buying from before you commit.
