Closing your account, and what survives it

You can leave. It should be said plainly, near the top, because a platform that makes this hard is telling you something about how it sees you.

What happens

A deletion request is handled by anonymising your profile and removing personal fields where we can.

Verification, provenance and audit records may be kept in anonymised form. So the record of a piece survives, without you attached to it.

Why those records stay

Because they were never only about you.

When you sell a piece, the buyer receives a record: who made it, how it was made, who owned it before. That record is a large part of what they paid for. If closing an account erased the history it had written into other people’s pieces, then every record on the platform would be one deletion away from a hole, and the whole thing would be worth nothing to anybody.

So the chain stays intact and your name comes off it. That is the balance, and we would rather state it than discover it in a support ticket.

The same logic applies at a smaller scale to removing an item. Taking it out of your collection changes what you see in your account; it does not erase the underlying verification record.

Worth checking before you go

If the reason is cost, the free tier keeps your private collection, your records, your certificates, your ability to sell and your resale royalty. Dropping to free is not the same as leaving, and for most people it is what they actually wanted.

If the reason is that you are not using it, your collection costs nothing to leave sitting there, and a registered record is worth most in ten years when somebody asks where a piece came from.

If the reason is that something went wrong, we would genuinely rather hear it. A leaving member who tells us why is more use to this platform than one who quietly goes.

What we cannot do

We cannot remove a piece’s history from the owners who now hold it, and we cannot un-issue a certificate that somebody relied on when they bought something. Anonymising is the honest limit, and any platform promising more in this situation is either misunderstanding the question or not telling you the truth.
