What to put on a certificate of authenticity

Keep a copy of every certificate you issue, with a photo of the work. If a buyer ever asks you to confirm a piece, your own records are what you will check against.

The limits of a paper certificate

A printed certificate is a good start, and many buyers expect one. Its weakness is that anyone can print a certificate. It can be copied, attached to a different piece, or lost when the work is sold on. Years later, a buyer has no way to check it against anything.

That is the problem Veriroo was built to solve. A Veriroo certificate is linked to a live record of the work. A buyer scans the QR code and sees who made it, who has owned it and any expert verification, and the record moves with the work every time it is resold. Questions

Can I make my own certificate of authenticity?

Yes. Artists can issue certificates for their own work. Fill in the template above, print it on good paper, sign it by hand and keep a copy for your records.

Is a certificate of authenticity legally binding?

It is a statement by the issuer about the work. Its weight depends on who issued it and whether its claims can be checked, which is why a record a buyer can check independently carries more weight than paper alone.

Do prints need a certificate of authenticity?

Limited edition prints usually come with one, stating the edition number and size. Open edition prints, which are unsigned and unnumbered, usually do not.
