What is a living Certificate of Authenticity?

A Certificate of Authenticity has been a standard document in the art world for decades. But the traditional paper certificate has a fundamental problem: it is static. It was written once, at a point in time, and it captures a snapshot of what was known then. It cannot update when ownership changes. It cannot incorporate new expert inspection reports. And it cannot verify itself — a buyer receiving a paper certificate has no independent way to confirm it is genuine.

A living Certificate of Authenticity is built on a different principle entirely. Rather than being a document that is created once and filed away, it is a permanent digital record that is part of the artwork’s provenance chain — and that reflects the work’s current state at any moment in time.

Why traditional certificates fall short

Paper certificates get lost. They get separated from the works they cover, particularly when works change hands multiple times over decades. They can be photocopied and attached to different works. They can be forged. And critically, there is no independent way to verify the claims they make — a buyer receiving a paper certificate with an artist’s signature cannot confirm that signature is genuine, that the work described matches the work in front of them, or that the certificate has not been modified.

PDF certificates address some of these problems but not the fundamental one: they are still static documents whose claims cannot be independently verified against a live record. The art market has an extensive history of forged paper and PDF certificates — a fact that any serious buyer or seller should take seriously.

How a living certificate is different

A living Certificate of Authenticity is digitally registered at the point of a work’s first sale on Veriroo. It is permanently linked to the work’s provenance chain — the tamper-evident digital record that captures every creation event, ownership transfer, expert inspection, and exhibition history since the work was registered.

When ownership transfers, the certificate updates automatically. The new owner’s details are reflected in real time. No new certificate needs to be issued. No paperwork changes hands. The record is continuous and unbroken from the point of first registration.

What it contains

Every Veriroo Certificate of Authenticity contains the work’s title, medium, dimensions, and year of creation; the artist’s name and verified identity on the platform; the full ownership chain from first registration to the current owner; the current trust tier and any expert verification reports; and a QR code that links directly to the live provenance record.

Scanning the QR code at any point in the work’s future — years or decades after the initial sale — will show the complete, up-to-date record: who owns the work, who has owned it, what experts have said about it, and whether there are any flags or disputes on record.

Why it matters for buyers

For buyers, the living CoA means you receive a document you can actually trust. You can verify it instantly before you buy. You can verify it again when you receive the work. And if you ever sell the work, the certificate transfers automatically to your buyer — carrying the complete history of everything that happened to the work before it reached them.

The living CoA is not a gesture of good faith from the seller. It is an independently verifiable, tamper-evident record whose authenticity does not depend on trusting anyone in the chain.

For artists, the living CoA is a form of permanent identification for your work.
