They Were Always Here explores the quiet persistence of nature within the modern city. Created from an original photograph and transformed through digital intervention, the work introduces a group of bright yellow ducks into an urban landscape, turning an ordinary city scene into something playful, strange and slightly surreal. The title suggests that nature has not disappeared from the city. It remains present alongside architecture, infrastructure and the rhythms of contemporary urban life, even when we stop noticing it. The deliberately simple, almost childlike ducks create a contrast with the scale and seriousness of the built environment, inviting the viewer to reconsider who really belongs in the landscape. The work forms part of Olga Regina’s ongoing exploration of London, memory, imagination and contemporary urban experience. The work was presented as part of Olga Regina’s solo exhibition, Memory of a New City, at Brady Arts Centre, London, in April 2026.
